From the shop

The biggest door in the house, done right.

Before work starts you will know exactly what we intend to do and what it involves. If we find something else while the door is apart, we stop and show you, and you decide whether to add it. Nobody should learn about extra work from the invoice, and nobody should be talked into a part they did not need.

Garage door services

Help with your door

When a door stops, you want to know two things: what happened and what it takes to fix it. The service pages below answer both for every job we do, from the smallest adjustment to a whole new door.

Repairs

Repair & Maintenance

Rollers, hinges, tracks, seals and the bottom rubber all wear at their own pace. We replace what is tired, adjust what has drifted, and leave the rest alone.

Springs

Springs & Hardware

Replacing springs is precise work: measure the old spring, calculate the new one, wind to the correct turns, then confirm balance across the full travel. This group covers that and the cables that go with it.

Garage Door Roller ReplacementEvery morning the door announces itself: a rattle on the way up, a grinding squeal on the way down, loud enough that the neighbours know when you leave. A spray of lubricant settled it for a day or two, then the racket…
  2. A person examines a central hinge joining two sections of a closed garage door. — Garage Door Hinge Replacement, Oro-Medonte
Garage Door Hinge ReplacementWatching from inside as the door opens, you can see the gap between the second and third panels open up on one side as they turn the corner into the ceiling, then close again. The other side stays tight.
  3. A person examines the vertical side track of a closed garage door. — Garage Door Track Repair or Replacement, Oro-Medonte
Garage Door Track Repair or ReplacementYou bought the house with a door that sticks near the top of its travel. The vertical track was screwed tight against the jamb, so the door drags along its stop moulding on every trip instead of swinging clear.

Garage Door Balance AdjustmentYou pulled the red cord to move the door by hand during the power cut, lifted it to about waist height and let go. Instead of staying put, it kept climbing on its own and thumped into the fully open stop.

Torsion Spring Replacement

The door starts to rise, gets about the height of your knee, then shudders and reverses. The opener sounds strained, and the top section flexes as the trolley pulls on it, because the motor is doing work the spring used to do.

Which fix fits?

The remote only works when you are almost in the driveway. The usual fix

UsuallyBattery, antenna and interference check.

WhyA weak battery or a tucked-away antenna wire shortens range; some LED bulbs in the opener can also interfere.

The outside keypad lights up but the door ignores it.The usual fix

UsuallyKeypad reprogramming.

WhyThe code has likely dropped out of the opener's memory; re-pairing brings it back.

You have moved in and there are no remotes at all.The usual fix

UsuallyOpener memory reset and new remotes.

WhyWe erase every old code so previous owners' remotes stop working, then program yours.

It is the coldest morning of the year. The usual fix

UsuallyEmergency Release Repair

WhyThe release only earns its keep on a door that behaves once it is free of the opener, so the visit starts with the door closed and a balance test rather than with the handle.

The bottom section has absorbed years of moisture and road-salt residue. The usual fix

UsuallySectional Garage Door Replacement

WhyA warmer garage begins with more than an insulation label.

Your garage is becoming a workshop, but the thin single-skin door rattles, sweats and lets outdoor temperatures shape the whole room. The usual fix

UsuallyInsulated Steel Garage Door Installation

WhyThe handover is an important part of an insulated steel door installation.

How a visit goes

Most openers built in the last fifteen years report their own trouble. When something is wrong the head unit blinks its lights in a count, an up arrow and a down arrow flashing in a pattern, or a status light repeating a number.

Drawing: a house seen from the street. The van pulls up, the garage door is opened for the work, then it closes level and the porch light comes on.
  1. 1 of 3

    Arranging the visit

We agree a time that suits you and confirm what we will bring. If a photo helps, send one; a crooked door or a snapped spring is easy to spot.

  2. 2 of 3

    Looking before deciding

The technician inspects the door from the tracks to the opener, checks the spring size and condition, and notes anything else that is wearing.

  3. 3 of 3

    Doing the work properly

Springs are wound to the correct turns, cables seated on their drums, hardware tightened, and the balance confirmed so the door stays where it is left.

2021 census · what it means at the door

  • 44%Homes of every age

About 44% of homes in Oro-Medonte were built in 1980 or earlier, according to the 2021 Census.

Where houses span several decades, weatherproofing needs vary: older garages with uneven aprons need thicker bottom seals, newer ones mainly need cracked seal sections replaced. The technician looks at how the door meets the floor and the jambs and fits the seal that actually closes the gap.

  • 97%Mostly houses

Single-detached houses make up about 97% of homes in Oro-Medonte (2021 Census).

Where homes are detached, the garage is frequently a workshop or storage room as well as parking, and the door may be opened dozens of times on a Saturday. Sealed-bearing rollers, protected sensors and a regular tune-up keep a hard-working door running smoothly.

What is the red cord for, and is it safe to pull?

It is the emergency release that disconnects the door from the opener so you can move it by hand, for instance during a power outage. It is safe when used with the door closed. Pulling it with the door open is the risk, because an unbalanced door can then drop. Pull straight down, lift the door by its handle, and reconnect afterwards by running the opener or lifting until the trolley clicks back in.

My opener went completely dead after a power outage. Is it finished?

Not usually. Outages and the surges that ride along with them commonly trip a breaker or a ground-fault receptacle, blow the small fuse on the board, or knock out the transformer, and each of those is a modest repair. A surge that damages the logic board itself is the more serious case, and whether that board is replaced or the unit retired depends on the model's age and part availability. The diagnosis tells you which case you have.

My remote only works when I am close to the door. Why?

Short range is almost always interference or a weak signal, not a broken opener. Certain LED bulbs, including ones fitted in the opener's own sockets, emit noise on the frequency remotes use. A remote battery near the end of its life also loses reach before it fails outright. The technician tests range with a known-good remote, swaps bulbs, checks the antenna wire hangs free below the head unit, and replaces the battery or remote as needed.

Does the opener need adjusting after the spring is replaced?

Usually a little. A balanced door presents a much lighter load than a door with a broken spring, so the opener's force settings are reset to suit it, and the travel limits are checked so the door seals at the floor and stops cleanly at the top. The technician then runs the reversal test and the photo-eye check to confirm the safety system responds correctly with the new balance.

Will the sensors need replacing or just aligning?

Most visits end in alignment, cleaning and bracket work, because the sensors themselves are hardy. Replacement comes into it when a lens has clouded or crazed, when the housing is split or holds water, an indicator stays dark with the wiring proven good, or the pair is from a different generation than the opener and is never recognised. The technician tests before choosing, so the parts list matches what the door needs.
